The attached documents outline both the mental and written methods that we teach at Fairway Primary School from Year 1 to Year 6. It is designed to give the children a consistent and smooth progression of learning when using the four operations. We aim for the children to calculate with both speed and accuracy.

The calculation policy is organised according to year group expectations as set out in the National Curriculum.

The children are taught to decide which strategy they should use when they calculate. They are given opportunities to discuss and explain why they have chosen a particular strategy and whether it is the most efficient method of calculation.

The children are taught to ask themselves:

• Can I do this mentally in my head?
• Do I need to use any jottings to help me to calculate?
• Do I need to use a formal written method?
